Counseling Philosophy: How we cultivate wellness
As a counselor, I believe there are numerous paths towards cultivating mental health and wellness. Every path starts with an authentic sense of alliance between counselor and client. In sessions, I will honor you as the expert in your own journey and assist you using my counseling knowledge. I utilize cognitive-behavioral techniques, which means I believe there are connections between our thoughts, feelings, and actions. We can learn and unlearn these connections to lead a more fulfilling life. I also maintain a relational-cultural therapy perspective, which means that I believe personal growth occurs naturally within healthy relationships both in and outside of the counseling session. No matter which path you choose, I will be happy to accompany my clients as they cultivate the life they want.
My Story
Each of our stories are infinitely complex, and mine is no different. Here are some short snippets of my story so you can get a sense of who I am:
A child of immigrants. Born and raised in Mississippi. I live in San Antonio, TX with my fiancée, our two dogs, and our many plants. I am a LPC in Texas, LPC in Idaho, and a college advisor for first-generation and low-income high school students. In my free time, I enjoy playing basketball, teaching my dogs tricks, reading, and spending time with family and friends in new places.
I received my B.A. in Cognitive Science from Occidental College in Los Angeles and moved to Texas to work in education. As a high school math teacher, I was passionate about helping my students actualize the life they wanted and to inspire them to make a positive impact on the world around them. I decided to begin counseling as a response to the mental health needs I recognized in the students I taught, the people I worked with, and the communities I have always been a part of. I received my M. Ed. in School Counseling from UTSA, taking extra classes to become a licensed professional counselor and National Certified Counselor.
