Texas is a state built on the drive of those who crossed borders, oceans, or cultural divides seeking a better life. This ambition and resilience that characterizes the people of Texas can also create unique pressures that are often suffered in silence.
At Mindful Garden Counseling, I help Texans cultivate a more fulfilling life. Whether you are living in nepantla — the in-between space of cultural expectations and individual ambition — or you are a man struggling with emotional clarity while also projecting strength and security, this is the space for you.
Texas is home to nearly 6 million immigrants, accounting for roughly 19% of our population. In fact, 1 in 8 U.S. born Texans have at least one immigrant parent.
Being 'First-Gen' or a child of immigrants in Texas often means living between two worlds. Frequently the first to enter higher education, white collar industries, or financial stability in the U.S., you carry the weight of generational sacrifices and expectations. This can lead to:
Cultural Guilt: Feeling like you must succeed to justify your family's journey.
The 'double life': balancing traditional cultural values with the demands and ambitions of career success.
Imposter Syndrome: Feeling like you don't truly belong in the spaces you've worked so hard to breakthrough.
Parentification: Growing up as the "translator" or emotional anchor for your family, often managing adult responsibilities before you were ready, leaving you feeling responsible for everyone’s well-being but your own.
I provide a space where you don't have to explain your culture — you just have to be yourself. Together we can build a life that feels genuine and aligns with you personal values.
In Texas, there's an expectation of toughness and resilience for men. While resilience is a virtue the pressure to "tough it out" often leaves Texas men isolated and ashamed to ask for help.
If this sounds relatable to you, I hope these statistics are a wake up call:
Nearly 1 out of 10 men experience depression or anxiety, and yet less than half ever receive treatment for it.
In Texas, men are 4x more likely to die by suicide than women, often because the "quiet struggle" prevents early intervention.
Societal expectations often teach men that vulnerability and emotions are weaknesses. In reality emotions are part of the human experience and vulnerability requires courage and strength.
In virtual sessions, I provide a space for men to let their guard down and explore raw emotions to better understand themselves. My approach is genuine and goal oriented. I allow you to see the real me, so you can show me the real you. Together we focus on goals to manage stress, improve relationships, and regain fulfillment in your life.
